The greatest benefit of working with LUCE (other than the music) is getting to know Tom Luce. Working with artists is always an enlightening experience – but Tom and I have a unique story. I first met LUCE in 2001 when they had a brief one-off distribution deal with What Are Records, prior to getting signed by Nettwerk. I was still greener than i knew. i was hungry. eager. My job at that time was to manage the band’s field staff, send posters to venues, signed cds to fans and promotional materials to promotional outlets. I was a bad ass. Loved to interact with the fans. Each day of the week i would focus on a different band – i had the rotation of my work hours down to a science, and every Wednesday was LUCE day: and it was a good day. One day the band visited our office in boulder and i geeked out, blaring While My Guitar Gently Weeps so they’d think i was cool.

Flash forward about 8 years later, I’m still not cool, but at least my phone rings and I pick it up: It’s Count. Will I come over for wine, and hang out with his new client Tom? We’re in the studio, maybe we’ll play some of it for you.

within 5 minutes of my arrival, it all made sense.

Oh Emm Gee, you’re Tom LUCE! I’m Corey from W.A.R
….and within seconds our relationship re established itself. Too good to be pre written. No deity could think it up. It’s poetry.

And as we re-connected, I learned of the blockades that LUCE endured before going into the studio with Count.

Tom’s house burnt down, but it didn’t throw him or the band off course – he went on tour the following week anyway. And then the band’s gear was stolen on the road. WHAT? yeah. everything was stolen.

Tom wrote a blogpost about the band’s experiences which lead them to their new release Corner Of The World. After all this time the reward of finding an artist i respect cannot help but remain an artist, forever evolving and creating as he is meant to be, making music as is meant to be – well, it surpasses the pleasure any financial success. Kudos, Tom Luce.

On the lighter and A W E S O M E side, the band has been shooting video on the road and they are f*ing fantastic, short, amusing. In addition the CD Release party for Corner Of The World is July 11, 2009 at Great American Hall in San Francisco (get tickets)

the interstitial moment between art ingestion & reactive output lends itself as fertile ground to the implementation of social action. Every holiday season, multiple compilations raising money for social cause are released to raise money and awareness for the right to be human. Sew the internet into a web of tools available to take social action, and the average person with a computer and internet connection can experience the art of giving in the most efficient manner possible. What does all this mean?

I want to help, because i have to. my pesonal experience with music renders a belief system in which the sound of music comprises the human contribution to the sound of earth. And since i can’t get to Darfur to help contribute to humanity……i looked for the musical compilation of the holiday season which accomplishes the task at hand.

Waxploitation will launch its inaugural Causes album series with Causes 1 which includes exclusive and rare tracks donated by Animal Collective, The Black Keys, Bloc Party, Bright Eyes, Cornelius, The Cure, David Sylvian, Death Cab for Cutie, (International) Noise Conspiracy, The Shins remixed by Clint Mansell, Spoon, Teargas & Plateglass, Thievery Corporation and Travis.

One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to three non-profit organizations: Doctors Without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders.org), Human Rights Watch (www.hrw.org) and Oxfam America (www.oxfamamerica.org).

The album will be available digitally on iTunes for only 90 days beginning on November 27th. “We’ve made a conscious decision to create a sense of urgency – to mirror what is a dire situation in Darfur. It’s not just a symbolic gesture,” says Waxploitation’s founder Jeff Antebi. “These non-profits need help there now.”

Waxploitation will also be pressing a limited edition CD which can be pre-ordered by signing up at waxploitation.com

Although estimates of the number of people killed by the conflict in Darfur vary widely from 200,000 to 400,000, what is certain is that more than 2 million people have fled their homes because of the fighting, and 4 million are now in need of humanitarian assistance—making this one of the worst crises in the world today.”

Turns out New Pornographer and solo artist Todd Fancey’s a huge fan of Halloween, so we’re making it a special day. First off, we’re giving away one of our favorite songs from his new album “Schmancey,” the appropriately themed “Witches Night,” all week long right here. It’s the story of a young male haunted by an evil ex-girlfriend, so we’re guessing a few of you out there can more than relate. Then, Todd’s going to host the first ever “Terrifying Halloween Interweb Tour.” More than your typical on-line chat session, thanks to me.dium.com, everyone who participates can simultaneously check out the websites and youtube clips that Todd frequents. In other words, you’re gonna get a guided tour through Todd’s world. Scary? Terrifying? Creepy? Only in the best, most fun way possible.

The “Terrifying Tour” is a unique chance to get to know more about Todd’s work in the studio and on the road with the New Pornographers, and to check out his thoughts on his dazzling new solo record “Schmancey.”
