About Not Shocking

Hi, I’m Corey. You can follow me on twitter @coreythrace.

Not Shocking is my blog. It began as a blog in 2002 because one of my best friends wanted to discuss Jean Baudrillard’s  The Spirit Of Terrorism. Years later Not Shocking  is simply a blog with a twitter feed. The blog is a creative space for me, around the parameters I set for reasons I choose, and the @NotShocking twitter feed actively vets the least surprising news in the entertainment industry. Prepare to stay seated.

The Not Shocking Archives are located on the old blogspot blog, right here. “Very soon” I will import those archives. But first, I am tending to my day job at Toolshed, working with Ani DiFranco, Kate Bush, Martin Sexton, FIX (Ministry Movie), John Wesley Harding, Peggy Sue, Clem Snide, Alyssa Graham….

Toolshed was formed in 2001, and is one of the oldest and most respected digital marketing agencies in the US.

Over the years, Toolshed has become the go-to company for Media, Tech, and Entertainment companies looking for:

  • online strategy services
  • micromedia marketing
  • online promotion
  • social network marketing
  • direct-to-fan marketing and campaign design
  • digital music service licensing

These services are provided to an elite clientele built on trust, customized service, and creative solutions that leverage years of experience in the field.

Toolshed has handled online audio and video marketing campaigns for artists as diverse as Ani DiFranco, Spoon, XTC, The Arcade Fire, Aimee Mann, Jeff Buckley, Sufjan Stevens, and hundreds of others.

Toolshed label clients include the Beggars Group, Merge Records, Saddle Creek, Touch and Go, Righteous Babe, and Kill Rock Stars, among many others.

Oh…and

I am also a sometimes-columnist for the SF Appeal, San Francisco’s Online Newspaper, enjoy coddling my photography habit and writing a lot of fiction that I am too chicken to publish. yet.

Here’s a few complimentary and embarrassing quotes about my work and I’d love to hear from you by way of the Contact page

“Corey is not only a leading change agent for the new music business, she is a change agent for the artists trying execute a digital strategy to break through this crowded and complex marketplace.”
- Tom Silverman, Founder & President TommY BoY Entertainment & Co-Founder, New Music Seminar

“Corey is innovative, intelligent and always thinks outside the box. I am inspired by her enthusiasm for technology and music and I am always impressed with her knowledge of the space. I am thrilled that we can continue working together on exciting projects that bring music and technology together.”
    - Marisol Segal, Senior Director, Business Affairs @ rdio

“Corey turned a small SXSW social network into a thriving community in just a few weeks. Uber-impressive.”         – Kyle Ford, Director of Product Marketing, Ning, Inc.

“Corey is awesome…. she helped jumpstart CyberPR in the social networking and Web 2.0 worlds and she did it in 48 hours flat!”
        – Ariel Hyatt, Cyber PR & Ariel Publicity

“I worked with Corey to create the world’s first online music festival.  In weeks, she had developed the concept for the online festival – which we called “RockMe” – figured out how to communicate the value to a non-tech (i.e. music) audience, signed up (huge!) bands to take part, and completely sorted the online promotions. She was a one-woman hurricane of ideas, passion, know-how and execution. She completely understood how to leverage new tech and social media to deliver enormous value to both “the industry” and the end-consumers. The actual “RockMe” event was a huge success. Thousands of fans surfed the web with their favorite bands all week long. Thanks Corey!”    -  Tobias Peggs, VP, OneRiot

“Corey and I go as far back as the beginning of podcasting. Well, almost the beginning. Since we met in 2005 she has been instrumental in being a communications hub and facilitator between IndieFeed, the Association of Music Podcasting, Libsyn, and her organization back at IODA. She is a music enthusiast just like me. She has a way of getting the job done without making it feel like work! I always look forward to bumping into her on both coasts.”
- Chris MacDonald, EVP Business Development and Operations, Libsyn & Founder, Indiefeed

“I’ve worked with Corey on joint projects and events and I always know I can count on her to get things done right. She’s resourceful and self-motivated. She has a deep understanding of the recording industry and excellent taste in music.”
-Jonthan Cobb, Founder & CTO, Kiptronic, Inc.

“Corey is an intelligent, amazingly hard-working person who was able to wear many hats at our small company. She brought a lot of energy and new ideas to our company during her time here, and we look forward to working with her and her new company in the future.”
- Matthew Wilkening, General Manager, What Are Records?

*The Not Shocking archives do reveal that at one point this blog was used professionally as the umbrella for consulting work. Durng those times, many blogposts were directly linked to clients, but any post related to a client states the intent within the first sentence. Give or take a few press releases, I’ve never posted anything here in which I did not also firmly believe.
