Open Dialogue: The Facebook Conversations

melissagira.comIf you and i are friends on facebook, there’s a chance you may have seen part of a video project that my amazing friend Melissa Gira (sexerati.com) and I are tossing around. We are girlfriends, and we pour coffee, call each other to touch base, put each other on speaker and videotape it. It’s all real. And yes, we talk about sex – which isn’t shocking considering that Melissa is a Sex Worker Advocate, and has even travelled to Columbia advocating health, safety, rights, and solutions such as webcams, blogs, and schematics for cyberdildonics. Yes…cyberdildonics. And of course, i also have an aptitude for conversation which induces a blushing or two.

the open source movement doesn’t limit itself to the average american comfort zone. The last two times Melissa and i have engaged in our conversation project, sexually related content was a part of the dialogue because we are who we are, engaging in a communication project. Focusing on content, mode, or the resulting media is the voyeur’s choice. I realize that judgement is an inherent result in the participation of any viewer and do not perceive it as risk but rather as default outcome in the minority of possible resulting scenarios. By engaging in social media I am subject to cases of judgement based purely on one’s own perceptions about content and therefore less on concept. Under the canopy of heuristics, digital psychology, sexual freedom and information science, the project persists… Regardless of the subject matter, the facebook conversations may not merely be about sex, and do not even reveal that much about my own sexual choices or dating habits of my own, but are little moments of media left open to the evolution of the project itself.

it’s been a summer of open source conversation.

Open Dialogue: evolving conversation which grows beyond it’s original form when re-experienced by either the parties involved and/ or the observer (who is immediately exposed to the deficits of information resulting from the observation of lost words, phrases or misinterpretations) resulting in a shift of semantic perception among participants and voyeurs.
