The Black Angels made my personal “best of” lists in both 2005 and 2006 and might make it in 2007….with an EP in 2005, a full length in ’06, and one of the best live performances of SxSW 2007. The Black Angels are at The Independent tonight, area code 415. Here’s an mp3 to download from their full length, “Passover.”

“Some zombie fans continue the George Romero tradition of using zombies as a social commentary. Organized zombie themed flash mobs or Zombie Walks, which are primarily promoted through word of mouth, are regularly staged all over the world. Usually they are arranged as a sort of surrealist performance art but they are occasionally put on as part of a unique political protest such as on Buy Nothing Day, November 25, 2006, in Montreal, a crowd of Zombies invaded the downtown core to take part in a “Shopping Spree of the Dead” and ridicule the compulsive aspect of Christmas shopping.The world’s largest zombie walk was held on October 29, 2006 in Monroeville Mall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the setting of Romero’s original Dawn of the Dead film. The walk consisted of 894 attendees who all were instructed to bring canned food for a local food drive. The walk was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest zombie walk ever held.Other organizations such as Zombie Squad use the genre as a way to promote disaster preparedness and to encourage horror fans to become involved in their community, through volunteering or hosting zombie themed charity fund raisers.”

Earthless - Godspeed (Edit)behold: the earthless pre release. the entire album is one track, so this mp3 is both an exclusive pre release and a special edit. The Earthless release is stoner friendly heavy protometal and not yet for sale.
Pitchfork’s recent review refers to Earthless as
“brawny instrumental rock that’s all tension, no release, revealing vintage tastes in the swinging drums and pipe organ that doubles the guitars just when it gets repetitive, and the double-speed palm-muted guitars when that gets repetitive. This cut of “Godspeed” just gets more classic . . .”

In Memorium :: Marjorie Wise

I found out this morning, but it happened on Sunday. She was my stepmom’s mom, and a 4th generation washingtonian.

MARJORIE MANDLE WISE

On May 21, 2007, MARJORIE MANDLE WISE of Chevy Chase, MD, beloved wife of the late David Wise, Jr. for 36 years, and mother of Babette Wise Denis (Howard), David Wise, III and Barry Mandle Wise (Lori). She is also survived by four grandchildren, Oliver Lloyd Wise, Andrew Cole Pergam, Michael Alan Pergam and Corey Leigh Denis.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at the Washington Hebrew Congregation, 3935 Macomb St., NW, Washington, DC 20016. Interment following the service at Memorial Park, 1380 Alabama Ave., SE, Washington, DC.

The family will be receiving relatives and friends Thursday, May 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., as well as Saturday, May 26, from 7 to 10 p.m. at 4550 North Park Ave., #1005, Chevy Chase, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Marjorie’s name to the Metropolitan Washington Ear, 35 University Blvd., East, Silver Spring, MD 20901 or to the Nursing Education Fund, c/o Development Office, Sibley Memorial Hospital, 5255 Loughboro Rd., NW, Washington, DC 20016.

JPG mag lost a lot of users today when Heather Champ blogged about the intent of 8020 to rewrite their history following the acquisition. Photographers responded in kind by taking screenshots of their deleted accounts and posting them on flickr in the i deleted my jpg account” photo pool.
